Z-Wave Mail notification – Color lights – Alexa – Text – Smart Home – Long Range

This is a demonstration of my mailbox notification system using Z-wave contact sensor and color changing lights. The end of the video shows how to hack the sensor so that the external sensor shows up as the main contact sensor in Smartthings and other systems.

For the color changing light/s, in Smartthings I use the ‘Smart Lights’ smart app by Smartthings, and not mentioned is I also added a text notification by using the ‘Notify Me When’ app which is also by Smartthings.

The contact sensor shown in the video can be purchased here.

Note that since August 2018, Alexa can now be programmed to speak a notification with the Alexa App Routines with no additional hardware or software. In my case, when mail arrives not only does the light change color, and I get a text, but now Alexa says “Mail has arrived.”
