First Time Flying a Drone | DJI Spark

In this video, Jake from B&H takes the brand new DJI Spark for a spin, and it just happens to be his first time flying a drone. For a new pilot, the Spark features easy-to-use gesture controls, positioning systems, and tracking modes. It’s extremely small size and light weight also make it one of the most portable drones around, plus it’s capable of recording 1080p video.

I would have liked to see footage from your cameraman launching from your kayak and landing it back there. Did you launch from your hand and catch with your hand when it returned to you? I would have been nervous being a first timer above the water, particularly dealing with the boat etc.

How does the Spark do on relative closeups? I'm looking for a drone that will let me check out the gutters on my house, to see if they're clogged, and if so, where the blockage is…without getting on a ladder. I have a couple of lower end drones and those cameras do not let me view down at all, and even then I can't get very close without running into the house. Could you post such a video, or point me to one that already is posted? TIA

Nice video. It's Saturday here can't wait for Monday to come any quicker so UPS can deliver my Fly More Combo and my extra 3 batteries. I've been watching lots of videos to kinda prepare myself. Any specific videos you would highly recommend. Thanks in advance. I'm curious while in the kayak you took off from shore and landed back on shore or how did you pull it off. Thanks.

DJI is the worst drone company ever… My 2 month old Phantom 4 malfunctioned and flew away, that was 6 months ago and DJI refuses to do anything !!! DJI has the ability to review my flight records at the time of the malfunction, they did and admit their drone did indeed malfunction. The drone ended up crashing in a spot that is not retrievable. I even purchased the DJI aftercare warranty, what a joke that is!Β  I've done everything humanly possible to wake them up to do the right thing by replacing my drone, they have no shame, steer clear of them !!! They grew too quick and can't keep up with customer service !!!

You still haven't flown the drone if you haven't used the remote. First of all, it's safer, as you get more range, second of all, you can control it if it ever freaks out in flight. Third, the app has an issue of crashing while using certain drones, so a remote backup helps, even if you don't use it.

The virtual joysticks suck. Don't use those. They are way too imprecise for videography or photography. With the separate controller attachment, you could use this as a legit aerial shot tool. This has a 2 km range with the remote. And damn, imagine the shots you could get with the 500 ft Max altitude the faa allows for rc. I'm talking Max speed flights over large fields. I'm talking following the coastline and watching the sun set.

Tldr: you need the controller, it's not as fun to use it without it. It's like using a DSLR without using the viewfinder and you are also blindfolded.

When you get a chance, please try sprinting and make quick turns to run in opposite direction.

Can spark keep up with following you on Active track?

I like to use a drone for fast moving sports. Can spark can cut the job.
